Diary

Final reflection

This three weeks at school has been amazing. I've learnt so much about the education system, how to deal with different situations and troubles. I wish this practicum were longer, however it has finished.

During this time I've notice the difference between an outside view of a classroom, the perspective as pupil and my new view as a teacher. I believe they are really distinct perspectives and I've enjoy so much the changes on my mind. When I thought about my rol at school I thought it wasn't to be as important as this one. It's because I've seen how children really need an extra aid at school. As I see it, we should have two teachers in the same schoolroom because there are some children who need different atention.

I reckon I would have like contribute more at school. However, it's quite difficult because of their routine. I wish people were more involved on schools because it will achieve a better development. Nevertheless, it's work for a teacher too because we've to awake the desire of being part of school. I wish go to this school in other situation because I'm really keen on some activities they propose.

To sum up, I've being living this three weeks as if I were a real teacher and I wish everybody has felt comfortable with me. Every week has been an adventure, my first adventure on Primary as a teacher. However, I'm completely sure it isn't going to be the last one. I've appreciated this job and I know there are still a lot I've to learn. Nevertheless, I'm going to do it proud of my first experience.

I've felt like one more and it has been fantastic. I've confirmed it's actually what I want to be. To finish, I would like to show a quote which is a summary of what I think we should done at school and, as I said on Evidences, it's a pity the Goverment is removing: the creativity and imagination of a child which is a treasure we loose with the time.

"The main goal of education is create people who will be able to do new things, not only repeat what other generations did; must be creatives, inventors and discoverers."  Jean Piaget.

18/01/2016

My first day on my school has been really interesting. As almost every school, we started at 9 o'clock. When I arrived to the school I had to talk with the director of studies. He talked about the importance of being in time and not to cross the rules of the center. Finally, he told me I was going to be in 5ºA and he accompanied me to that classroom.

I've been always thinking about how was going to be my first day. However, it has been better than I expected to. When I arrived to my class, my tutoress introduced me to the students. They were really open and I've felt comfortable since the very first minute. All of them wanted to introduce themself and after that we started the lessons.

I'm with an english teacher, so I must go to every fifths to teach that subject. There are three classes. I think it will be really interesting because I will notice the difference between each group, achieving a better objective perspective. Moreover, I could do an analysis about what could be my best class' distribution option because they have a different class organization.

My first thought was about the organization of their classroom because they don't use the traditional individual work: they are organizated as collaborative work. I think it's really important because they are arranged in order to work in groups.
Class wall
They try to encourage pupils to be generous, to collaborate, to be always with a smile and try not to be violent.

I've always read about the importance of group works: this kind of works are used as an aid to children who need some different help. However, it's also a way to introduce them into real life due to its connection with real jobs, in fact, when they will work in some job they will work collaboratively.
They can learn a lot with this methodology. Firstly, they can learn how to deal with different problems in a group. Secondly, they can learn to help others who need some aid. Thirdly, they can also know better other classmates.

I asked my tutoress about their organization and she explained me they change their places every month. They have a meeting where they talk about the distribution. They are not sitting arbitrarily: they have a student in need in each group in order to try get better results.
On the other hand, the captain of each group is the person who got the best marks in the last trimester. There are six captain and they choose one pupil in need and two other classmates.

We have some special pupils in the classroom which need some kind of help: a girl who is doing the fifth year for second time, a boy who has TDAH and a girl who needs educational support. They three spend some hours per week out of the classroom in order to help them. The boy who has TDAH go with a PT teacher and the other two girls go with an educational support's teacher.

Otherwise, we've another special pupil in the class but he hasn't got any problem with learning. He's a pupil whose height is quite different from a child of fifth course due to a physical development problem. For this reason, we've some adaptations in the class. Besides, the digital board it's really useful because it can change its height. Anyway, we've a bench in the normal board to make possible he participates.
Adapted chair

Their first subject on Mondays is Language. There was another surprise for me,  because I started to see their timetables and I realized it had changed from my years at school. When I went to school I had lessons during one hour. Nevertheless, it has change. Nowadays they have lessons of 45 minutes. I thought it could be a problem due to the time you can waste trying to calm the pupils. However, I've read a lot about it and I think it's better that way. Some studios reflect that pupils can not pay attention more than 40-45 minutes.
Timetable

In addition, they have a flexible timetable. This way, they can change some subjects if they haven't got enough time to teach the lesson. On the other hand, if they need an extra lesson to explain something the day before an exam, they can change the subjects.
As I see it, it's better for children because they can feel the real connection with all the subjects. They don't see maths like the second hour in the morning: they see it has one subject where they can learn more one day if they need to, or a subject where they spend less time if they don't need to use 45 minutes.

In the playtime my teacher suggested me to go to the playground with her to see what children do in their free time. It's amazing the contrast between 1º-2º and 5º-6º. Even their plays are completely different. In their first years on Primary, girls and boys are together. However, it starts to change when they're in 4º. It's absolutly indredible how they change their minds. As far as I'm concerned, I would like the perspective they have in their first years doesn't changed, and I think we should work in this aspect too, to concern them there is no difference between girls and boys even in their school plays. All the same, it's maybe a social problem.

When we went back to the class, children were learning Religion so my teacher and I went to the other class. Children were nice too and they made me felt my next weeks are going to be a really good experience.

I hope next days will be at least a half interesting than this one.

My first week

My first week at the school has been amazing. I've learnt so much about the organization of the school: children, classes, teachers, special areas, playground's organization...

In my classroom, my first two days has been a little bit strange due to my shame. In spite of being really interested in taking part on the class, I felt I wasn't good enough. However, when this two days carried on, I realized I had to have a participative action. Then, my teacher asked me to help children with their doubts.

My teacher and I talked about the Peace Day. It's an important day which it's celebrate in every school. The plan for this year consist on create a train. Each level have to create one train car. Nevertheless, as this year it's the 500th Centenary of Quixote, each train car must have a quote of The Quixote. Our quote is:

"La libertad, Sancho, es uno de los más preciosos dones que a los hombres dieron los cielos; con ella no pueden igualarse los tesoros que encierran la tierra y el mar".  (Clásicos Hispánicos. Don Quijote. Edición. Segunda parte. Cap.LVIII.)

As I was going to help in this project so I went to create the letters in order to facilitate them to children, with the objective of only make them color the letters. Next week we will put all the things in our train car, given by the coordinator.

As I see it, it's a good activity because they learn both things: peace day and something more about Quixote. However, I think they should done an introduction about this important book. Sometimes, we show something without create a real connection with pupils. We must always try to make sense what we are doing. This is one important aspect of education system.

During this week we talked about the violence between women and men. I've realized about the importance of taking care with the words you use with children because they can misunderstand you. I felt children very safe with their perspective in this issue. They were really aware of the news were some people kill someone. However, I think we shoud use media videos to show them it's a real problem in the world. For this reason, I must reckon that videos can help you to make them pay you attention and it's quite important: they are connected with digital world and we must introduce it on our classes.

Children's reaction to domestic violence

I've chosen this video because I consider it as a good resource to encourage them to be like this children. Only by using books we can't expect they understand the seriousness of the matter, for this reason, I consider that seeing children from their same age, they can adopt the same attitude, absorbing all the information which we try to pass on them.

On the other hand, I've seen the difference between children from ten years with children from eight years. It's because they have changed their minds. Now, they consider themselves as part of a society. I mean, when we were talking about politic due to domestic violence, they all said they wanted to change the laws because they consider that it's old. They talked about the relevance of being a good person, with values. With this issue, we are talking about the point given in the LOMCE, "Social and Civic competence".

As resources, my teacher uses the digital board. It's a good resource because children are more motivated with it. They can also manipulate the board and they feel the subject nearest.

In english, we were talking about the importance of safe animals endangered. Then, we propose to make a creative activity. It consist on makes children do a research about one animal endangered, then they had to write us a paper where they explain all the information using comparatives. As I see it, it's an useful activity because they develop two areas in one exercise: they learn some english (using comparatives) and they also learn about the animals in danger of extinction.
During all the week they could give us the exercise and we put it on the wall of the hall.
English project
They enjoyed the activity because we meet new animals we had no idea about them. From my point of view, we should use this activities to make their creativity go on. I would like they continued with this kind of activities because I've learnt too at the same time.

I had delight this week and I hope children will be as fantastic as this one. I'm waiting for learn much more next week.

Second week

This week has been really interesting too. I've realized I'm learning so much with this Practicum.

Firstly, we were talking about the earthquake. Children were excited with this issue and my teacher considered we must talk about it. I reckon they adopted an adult perspective about it because they talked about the importance of caring for the environment due to they were afraid with.

It's really important talking about the things which happens in the real world because they are exploring new situations. In fact, I consider we should have done more connected with the matter. Maybe, we should have done an activity related with earthquakes, an explication about this phenomenon, talk about what kind of things could we do in order to decrease them...

As far as I'm concerned, the most interesting thing I've done this week has been my intervention because I've felt as a real teacher for one day. It has been fantastic because I've learnt so much about my future as a teacher. I've develop a new way to transmit the information to children.
My intervention has been on maths. I know children must learn the contents of the book. Nevertheless, I tried to use a different way to transmit it. As I see it, children should enjoy their learning and with the actual education system which consist on being in front of a book during six hours it's imposible. For this reason, I chose a play to explain decimal numbers.

They have been in an excursion, a sport days in the patronage. They were excited with this activity because they enjoy the day doing sport. I encourage to do this activities because children felt as part of a collective competition. They worked together to win a trophy and they learn how to fell proud of others. But not everybody went to this sport days: only people who has been previously chosen went and I think it's an error because the other ones could feel they are not useful. Although they can't compete, they should go to encourage their classmates and feel part of the competition. In fact, children who couldn't attend to the patronage couldn't move forward with the subjects because of the law of 50% of the classroom. Then, they had to do a review of all the subjects. To do something different, we share the letters of the train car of the Peace day and they color them. Our train car was perfect.
Train car
Children enjoyed coloring the letters. We were talking about the importance of The Quixote and they also contributed naming other important books.

My teacher delivered some exams and I was surprised due to their results. When I was at school children used to pass all their exams. In fact, when someone fail their exam, everybody was surprised. However, I've seen a change in children's mind because they see how their classmates failled their exam and it was saw as something normal. I consider it as a family problem. When I was at school, families were more demanding of their children. Nowadays, most of them aren't at home until 21:00 o'clock. It's because families are less involved in children's education. We must try to change it in order to make education something which everybody'll involved. I've been taking part on every activity my teacher did and I consider it's the best way to learn: participate.

One thing I've seen it hasn't changed it's the way to do an exam. They had an examen where they had to write all the information given on their classes. I think it is not a good way to demonstrate what they have learnt. It's because of my experience: I've been doing exams during all my life and I can say I have no idea about the things I learnt on school. It's a pity but I reckon that because I've discover there are new ways to try what you learn. I hope someday it'll change in order to create a real learning.

When the Peace day started, children knew they were going to see their work. Then, when they went to the playground, they could see how their work joined with the other ones. It's the result of their activity on Peace day.
Peace train
During this day we were researching on this celebration. We talked about Gandhi and some of them told us a little bit about Gandhi's life. It was incredible how they knew something about this important person. It's amazing how adults don't know some basic aspects as his real name. As proposal, I had put some videos of Gandhi, for example the film inspirated on his life. Even if you think you'll lose your time showing this film, you'll discover you'll win some development on children' hide curriculum.

I discover the way my teacher uses a diary. They have a blog where they everyday put their homeworks. It's interesting because they can access to this blog when they are in their houses. It's a good way to make easier the comunication between teachers and families. With this blog, they can see what their children did this day and also if they couldn't attend, they can do the homeworks. I recommend this method.

Another thing I've learnt during this week has been some aspects of my pupil's reaction. My first week they only asked me about going to the toilet or this sort of stuff. However, during my second week, they have started to consider me as another teacher. It has been really rewarding and I've seen a change on their attitude. Firstly, they saw me as an easy way to achieve what they wanted. When the second week went on, they asked me about their exercises, they talked me about their progress and their personal things. However, they had never thought about push away their real teacher. I think it's fantastic how children can accept a new person in their lives without necessity of feel strange. I reckon it's one of the most important things I've seen during this week.

Third week

It has been my last week and I'm really sad. I would like it will be longer because I was starting to enjoy and know better the pupils. It's a pity this Practicum is too short.

During this week, we were doing a project of Torremolinos. My teacher and I asked the children to search some photos about Torremolinos: the difference between the 60's and the present. They were really interested in this activity because we tried to awake their desire to learn.

They gave us their projects and we put them on the wall. As a result, we had really impactant photos.

Torremolinos' project

We talked about the change of the years and they all agree we must try to care about the environment in order to keep our city. On monday we did an english exam. It was a little bit strange because we had to do the same examen in each class. I think as a teacher that we should change this aspect. It's true it'll be easier to teachers teach the same three times. However, children will notice you're fed up with the same. I mean, we had to teach the same in 5ºA, 5ºB and 5ºC three consecutive hours. When we were on the third one, we couldn't remember what we had done in this class or what we had to teach as a new thing. It will be a problem and I think will be easier if we had different levels to teach in each one different things and make teachers be more interested in what are they teaching. Although I love teaching, it will become into a boring day, which affects children.

We also had a birthday of a girl and she brought us a cake. Everybody was excited. I consider this kind of activities important too because they feel the school as a family. We must encourage them to feel their classmates as other family and I think with this things we can achieve that. It's also a way to improve their values as sharing or be nice to everybody.

This week has been a little bit different because I had an illness. Nevertheless, I attend to the class although I couldn't talk due to a cold. Children were really comprehensive and they tried to make me feel better. It was rewarding because I felt really loved. I believe it is one of the best things I've appreciated during this practicum. If you have a bad they, they'll change it into a good day and it's fantastic.

On the other hand, my school has started a project named "Day of fruits". It consist on receive fruit from an association. Then, children eat fruit at least one a week. It's a good way to aware them about the importance of having an healthy life. When I was at school we had to bring a fruit on Wednesday. This kind of proposal help us to transmit children the necessity of being part of an healthy society.

During this week pupils has been telling me the days I had with them. It was a pity I couldn't stay 100% this week. However, I did other intervention with children. I teach a english lesson. They also had to talk about their dream profession. I considered it really interesting because they make a connection between real life (their future) and English as a subject (talking about professions).
I reckon they still think as children and they think in some tipical professions which we know it's really hard to achieve...but I think it's one of the most beautiful things of being a child. You never loose your ilussion and it's quite different from an adult. I would like they will be what they want, working hard to win that.

We made a meeting where children changed their responsabilities. I was surprised because they have an interesting responsability: take their classmate's bag. It's because of their difficulty. I consider it really useful because they learn how to deal with this problems. They can learn to empathize with everybody and not create prejudice. This way of being responsible is quite important to be on society.
